Cannabis Seedling Stage: Light Schedule, Watering & First 2 Weeks
Everything a new grower needs to know about the seedling stage — correct light intensity, humidity targets, watering volume, common mistakes, and when to start feeding.
The Seedling Stage: Most Fragile, Most Mismanaged
The seedling stage covers approximately the first 2–3 weeks after germination. Cannabis seedlings are extremely vulnerable — their root systems are undeveloped, their leaves are small, and their ability to buffer environmental stress is minimal.
Most first-time growers kill seedlings by doing too much: too much light, too much water, too many nutrients. The seedling stage rewards restraint. Your job is to create stable, gentle conditions and let the genetics do the work.
Light Schedule & Intensity for Seedlings
Photoperiod seedlings: 18 hours on, 6 hours off. This is the standard vegetative light schedule and is maintained from seedling through all of veg.
Autoflower seedlings: 18–20 hours on, 4–6 hours off from seed to harvest. Autoflowers don't need a 12/12 flip to flower.
Light intensity: Keep your LED at 20–30% power (if dimmable) and at 24–30 inches above the seedlings. Too much light causes seedlings to "reach" or stretch, produces thin weak stems, and can bleach the cotyledon (first) leaves.
Signs of too much light on seedlings:
- Leaf edges curling upward
- Bleaching or white spots on leaves
- Thin, stretched stems that can't support the plant
If your light isn't dimmable, increase the distance to 30–36 inches for the first week. A fluorescent or T5 is actually ideal for seedlings before switching to your main LED.
Ideal Temperature & Humidity for Seedlings
Seedlings thrive in high humidity because their underdeveloped root systems absorb much of their water through leaf stomata. Low humidity forces tiny roots to work overtime and slows growth significantly.
| Parameter |
Seedling Target |
Notes |
| Temperature (lights on) | 72–82°F (22–28°C) | Upper end of range is fine for seedlings |
| Temperature (lights off) | 65–75°F (18–24°C) | Keep within 10°F of lights-on temp |
| Humidity (RH) | 65–75% | Use a humidity dome if RH is below 55% |
| VPD | 0.4–0.8 kPa | Low VPD = less transpiration stress on seedlings |
A cheap plastic humidity dome (the kind that comes with seedling trays) works perfectly for the first week. Remove it gradually in the second week to harden off the seedlings.
How to Water Seedlings Without Killing Them
The two most common seedling mistakes are overwatering and watering in the wrong location.
Volume: Use 50–100ml at a time for seedlings in solo cups or small pots. Water in a small ring around the stem (not directly on the stem) to encourage roots to spread outward searching for moisture.
Frequency: Every 2–4 days in soil, every 1–2 days in coco. Let the top inch of soil dry out between waterings.
What to water with: Plain, pH'd water only for the first 10–14 days. Most seedlings don't need nutrients for the first 2 weeks, especially in pre-amended soils like a quality pre-amended potting soil. Starting nutrients too early causes nutrient burn on seedlings before they can handle the salt load.
When to Transplant & When to Start Feeding
When to transplant from solo cup to final pot: When you can see roots circling the bottom of the cup or poking out the drainage holes. Typically at 2–3 weeks. Don't wait too long — root-bound seedlings stunt significantly.
Transplanting tip: Water your seedling several hours before transplanting. Moist soil holds its shape better, protecting the fragile root ball during the move.
When to start feeding nutrients:
- In pre-amended soil (a quality pre-amended soil, etc.): Week 3–4, starting at 25–30% of recommended dose
- In coco or neutral medium: From first watering post-germination at very low concentration (100–150 PPM)
- In hydro: From first introduction to the reservoir at low EC (0.4–0.6)
The first sign of overfeeding seedlings is burnt, brown leaf tips on the first serrated leaves. If you see this, flush immediately with plain pH'd water and reduce PPM by 50%.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long is the cannabis seedling stage?
The seedling stage lasts approximately 2–3 weeks from germination. It ends when the plant has developed its third or fourth node (set of true leaves) and begins vigorous vegetative growth. Autoflowers may show first signs of pre-flowers as early as week 3–4.
Why is my cannabis seedling stretching?
Stretching (etiolation) is caused by insufficient light. The seedling is reaching toward the light source. Fix by lowering your light or increasing its intensity. If you're using a T5 or CFL, position it 2–4 inches above the seedling. With an LED, reduce the height to 24 inches and ensure the dimmer is at least 20–30%.
Should I use a humidity dome for cannabis seedlings?
Yes, for the first 5–7 days. A humidity dome maintains 70–80% RH around the seedling, reducing transpiration stress while roots are undeveloped. Remove the dome in the second week by cracking it open progressively to let the seedling harden off gradually.
Can I put cannabis seedlings under my full LED light?
Yes, but dim it to 20–30% and raise it to 24–30 inches. Full-power LED at 18 inches is too intense for seedlings and causes light stress, bleaching, or excessive stretching. If your light isn't dimmable, raise it to 30–36 inches for the first two weeks.
