How Often to Water Cannabis: Stage-by-Stage Schedule + the Lift Test

The exact watering frequency for cannabis at every stage — seedling, veg, and flower — plus the two methods (finger test and lift test) that eliminate overwatering, the #1 killer of first grows.

Overwatering Kills More First Grows Than Any Other Mistake

New growers water on a schedule — every 2 days, or every 3 days — and wonder why their plants look sick. Watering on a timer is one of the most common mistakes in cannabis cultivation. Plants need to wet-dry cycle: wet roots uptake nutrients and oxygen, then as the medium dries, the roots grow aggressively outward searching for water. No dry period = no root growth = small, sick plants.

There is no universal "water every X days" rule. The correct answer depends on your pot size, medium, plant size, temperature, and humidity. The lift test and finger test eliminate the guesswork entirely.

The Two Tests That Tell You Exactly When to Water

1. The Lift Test (Most Reliable)
Lift your pot when it's bone dry (after a full dry period). Remember that weight. Now water thoroughly. Lift it again — remember that weight. As the plant transpires and medium dries, the pot gets lighter. Water again when the pot feels close to its dry weight.

This works for all medium types and is how commercial growers manage watering at scale. It requires no guesswork — just baseline calibration on day one.

2. The Finger Test (Quickest)
Insert your finger 1–2 inches into the medium. If it's dry at that depth, water. If it's still moist, wait another day.

The finger test works well for soil but is less reliable for coco (coco should stay more consistently moist than soil) and useless for hydro. In coco, water when the top half-inch is dry — not a full inch.

Watering Frequency by Growth Stage

Stage Soil Coco Volume per Water
Seedling (week 1–2)Every 3–5 daysEvery 1–2 days50–100ml around stem
Early Veg (week 3–4)Every 2–3 daysEvery 1–2 days250–500ml
Late Veg (week 5–6)Every 2 days1–2x daily500ml–1L
Early Flower (week 1–4)Every 1–2 days1–2x daily1–2L
Late Flower (week 5+)Daily2x daily1.5–3L
These are starting points — always use the lift or finger test to confirm.

Signs You're Overwatering (And How to Fix It)

Overwatering doesn't always mean flooding. It usually means watering too frequently and not allowing the medium to partially dry between waterings.

Symptoms of overwatering:
Fix: Simply stop watering and let the medium dry completely. Lift the pot daily until it feels significantly lighter. Run an oscillating fan at low speed to accelerate evaporation. The plant will recover within 2–4 days once the root zone aerates.

Signs You're Underwatering

Underwatering is less common but happens when growers are overly cautious after an overwatering experience.

Symptoms of underwatering:
Fix: Water immediately and thoroughly. When severely dry, the medium can become hydrophobic and repel water — if water runs straight through without being absorbed, water in small amounts every 30 minutes to re-hydrate the medium slowly.

How Much Water Should Run Off? The 20% Runoff Rule

Every time you water, you should aim for 10–20% of the water volume to run out the bottom of the pot. This is called the runoff rule and it serves two purposes:

1. It ensures the entire root zone is hydrated (not just the top layer) 2. It flushes excess salts that accumulate from nutrient feeding

If you water 1 liter, look for 100–200ml of runoff. If zero water comes out, increase your watering volume. If more than 30% runs straight through, your medium may be compacted or hydrophobic.

Always check the pH and PPM of your runoff — it tells you the true conditions at the root zone. See our PPM chart guide for target runoff values.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know when my cannabis plant needs water?

Use the lift test: lift your pot when dry, lift it when wet, and water again when it feels close to its dry weight. Alternatively, stick your finger 1 inch into the soil — water when it's dry at that depth. Never water on a calendar schedule — always let the plant and medium tell you.

Can I overwater cannabis in coco?

Technically yes, but it's much harder than in soil. Coco has excellent aeration and doesn't waterlog like soil. In coco, the issue is usually watering too infrequently rather than too often. In late veg and flower, many growers water coco 2x daily with no issues.

Why are my cannabis leaves drooping after watering?

Slight drooping immediately after a heavy watering is normal — the plant is temporarily waterlogged and recovers within 1–2 hours as roots begin uptaking. If leaves are drooping and staying drooped for more than 4–6 hours post-watering, you are likely watering too frequently and the medium is not drying adequately between waterings.

Should I water cannabis every day?

Only in late flower when large plants in small pots can drink 2–3 liters daily. For seedlings and early veg in soil, watering daily is almost certainly overwatering. In coco, daily or twice-daily watering in flower is normal. Let the medium and the lift test determine frequency — not a calendar.
